Report from the Chair May 2007
REPORT FROM THE CHAIR
AFRM NSW BRANCH
2ND MAY 2007

Strategic Plan:
I have posted the revised organisational and strategic plans on the NSW website with minor changes. I would be pleased to receive any further comments or revision so that the plans accurately reflect our vision and operations.

Registrar Training Programme:
I have had recent discussions with Craig Patterson, CEO RACP, Chris Ryan, Director of Operations RACP and with Adam Niewand who looks after video presentations in the College about video conferencing our registrar training sessions to regional and rural areas. He was involved in videocasting the Epworth Series in Victoria last year. He will give me an updated costing based upon using the Phillip Street RACP headquarters as our primary presenter site. The RACP would subsidise our use of the primary site and the receiving sites would thus effectively receive the video presentation at reduced cost compared to earlier quotes. Should the costings be favourable, I believe we should re-consider using Phillip St as our primary training presentation site and maintain Ryde as a receiving site for those who prefer. This would enable the highest quality presentations to be sent to other sites, both from the point of view of the receiving sites and also from the point of view of the presenter. It also enables us to digitally record the presentations, enabling building up a digital library and even podcasting at little additional cost.

Web Page:
Tuan-Anh Nguyen is keeping an eye on this. You will notice that we now have both the AFRM and our stand-alone site operating almost in tandem. We are gradually moving all items across apart from the RehabSearch, which will take a little longer.

CME Matters:
Stephen Chung is organising the CME weekend on 10th and 11th November. The venue is Terrigal and the theme is Amputee Management. It is a beautiful venue and should be an excellent weekend.

Kathryn Brooke is continuing to organise the CME education evenings. As always we need names of speakers and venues please.

The NSW Branch in conjunction with a Special Interest Group in Musculoskeletal and Pain Medicine have organised a workshop on “The Assessment and Management of Common Chronic Knee Conditions” at Port Kembla Hospital on Saturday 28th July 2007. The session will be organised by Dr Alex Ganora and Dr Ian Davidson with the Branch Honorary Secretary handling the administrative aspects. Please expect further correspondence on this issue.

Registrar Recruitment:
I have received some recent correspondence from Dr Heriseanu on behalf of the Royal Rehab Centre supervisors who were proposing some improvements to the process of the Combined Advisory Committee’s workings. In my letter to supervisors urging support for the trainees in the day to day running of the units, I have also reiterated the importance of the Combined Advisory Committee process and the responsibility of the area representatives who currently sit on that committee. Phillip Conroy will be organising a meeting of the area representatives in the near future to plan this years recruitment process. We continue to have significant difficulty attracting adequate numbers of trainees into an ever-expanding number of accredited training positions, both in the public and the private sector, probably beyond the numbers we can realistically expect to recruit at the moment.

Medico Political Issues:
As you know we have received a favourable response from the NSW Minister of Health regarding our submission on improving access for NSW amputees to more modern technological componentry. Essentially the response reiterated the concept that the ALS will trial some improved access to higher componentry for specific cases, which will need to be requested on a case-by-case basis. I think this has been a positive response in the ongoing era of tight budgetary conditions.

We have recently responded on behalf of the Branch to the Department of Health Planning document on Developmental Disability Services stating the view that Rehab Medicine services have an important role in the further expansion of services supporting adults with developmental disability in the community. I have also recommended that funding be provided for a training position which could then be incorporated into our training rotation. We look forward to further developments.

We have recently received a request from the Lifetime Care and Support Authority of NSW for comments on their review of part one of the guidelines with a reply date 25 May 2007. We have a Faculty representative on the Authority, possibly Dr Adeline Hodgkinson or one of the other Brain Injury Rehab Specialists. We will canvass their views of any problems they are aware of, while seeking opinions of other relevant specialists in those fields. I will be asking if Chris Poulos could coordinate the response on our behalf.

ASM 2007:
As you know the Sydney ASM is almost upon us. The programme is an excellent one and at an advanced stage of development. Our only concern is one of numbers of registrants, which have been rather less than we had planned. I would urge you and your colleagues to try and address this at the local level in your hospital and among your colleagues.

Faculty Issues:
The Faculty Council will be meeting in Melbourne next Monday and this has been done in part to coincide with the RACP meeting, which includes our convocation but also the Annual General Meeting of the RACP which is facing a momentous decision to change the structure of the College which would in many ways elevate the Faculties to equivalent status to the current body of adult and paediatric physicians rather than being a second tier as has always been the case in the existing structure. Our federal executive believes we can only benefit from the proposed changes and we will keep you informed.
